Help Princess Heal Her Heart!

Last year, Kanlungan Centre Foundation accepted two Australian students as volunteers in our community work, as required from their respective courses in Australia. Shannon Steel and Jaclyn Molloy spent five months in Manila working with Kanlungan. They’ve met a young girl, Princess, and her mother, abandoned by their migrant worker father. Princess was born with congenital heart disease and she needs immediate heart operation.

Princess lives in Barangay Botocan (Quezon City, Philippines) with her mother (Florepes) and brother (Gabriel). The family abode with the brother of Florepes, who allows them to live free of charge. Princess also has two older brothers who are currently living with their grandparents in Bicol. They were abandoned by their father in January 2007. The father of Princess left the Philippines for Saudi Arabia supposedly to provide a better life for his family. After sending money home once, he met another woman and stopped sending support to his family. Florepes accepts laundry work and other cleaning jobs from Kanlungan Centre Foundation on an on call basis. Princess’ mother has sought out assistance from different government agencies for Princess’ medication.

Several medical assessments confirmed that Princess needed immediate medical treatment, aside from other financial support. The Philippine Social Services Development Department has assessed that the economic condition of the family is within poverty level.

The family of Princess, and the staff at Kanlungan are desperate to raise approximately 70,000 pesos for an operation to treat her condition, and some amount for medication and therapy after the operation.

Some pledges have been made by friends and networks of Kanlungan but more are needed.
